Beyond the storefront

A deep catalog needs more than a bigger search box.

Titles, formats, editions, availability, and editorial relationships need a deliberate model. We engineer discovery and the retail operation as connected workstreams.

A product model built for catalog depth

Define identifiers, authors, contributors, editions, formats, series, subjects, and related products. We validate platform limits and ingestion patterns against representative data before committing to a large-catalog architecture.

Catalog & enterprise integrations

Search for an exact title or the next discovery

Support precise lookup alongside thematic browsing, recommendations, and editorial curation. Relevance, filters, availability, indexing cadence, and performance are tested against the queries customers actually use.

Enterprise search & merchandising

Content that belongs beside the product

Model author pages, reading lists, collections, staff picks, and campaigns as reusable content. Connect those relationships to products so editorial teams can publish useful experiences without creating disconnected microsites.

Sanity & Shopify

Stores, membership, and service in the same journey

Coordinate identity, loyalty, gift cards, store availability, pickup, and order service across channels. Existing programs and business rules inform the integration; customers should not have to understand which system serves them.

Unified commerce & retail

Availability and preorders with a reliable source

Publish clear release dates, stock status, backorder messaging, and delivery expectations. We map supplier feeds, OMS decisions, split orders, and cancellations so the storefront promise reflects operational reality.

Manhattan Active Omni integration

Discoverability across a long-tail assortment

Plan canonical product URLs, edition relationships, internal linking, structured data, and faceted navigation. During migration, map existing URLs and validate indexability without turning every filter combination into a search landing page.

A practical way forward

The right starting point. A clear path to launch.

Begin with representative catalog data and real customer journeys, not a generic platform feature checklist.

How we work
  1. Prove the catalog and systems model.

Review product feeds, identifiers, search needs, stores, membership, and fulfillment. Validate the high-volume and edge-case flows before agreeing on architecture.

  2. Connect discovery to the retail operation.

Build the storefront, content, search, accounts, and integrations together. Reconcile migrated data, rehearse cutover, and test critical customer and store journeys.

  3. Keep the long tail healthy.

Monitor search relevance, no-result queries, product-feed exceptions, indexation, availability accuracy, and customer-service friction. Prioritize fixes using evidence from both shoppers and operators.

Good questions

Let’s get into the details.

Which booksellers and specialty retailers has SDG worked with?

SDG’s published work includes Barnes & Noble, Indigo, and MoMA Design Store. These engagements cover large catalogs, enterprise search, content, loyalty, stores, international commerce, and complex system integrations. Each case study describes its own scope.

Is Shopify suitable for a very large book catalog?

It can be, with an architecture validated against the actual catalog and operating requirements. We evaluate product and variant modeling, feed volumes, search indexing, API constraints, storefront performance, and inventory ownership rather than assuming a standard import is sufficient.

Do you work with publishers selling directly to readers?

Yes. We can scope direct-to-reader storefronts, author and title discovery, bundles, preorders, and institutional or wholesale buying. The architecture depends on the publisher’s catalog, distribution relationships, fulfillment, and existing systems.

Does this include ebook delivery, DRM, or royalty accounting?

Those are separate requirements, not automatic features of a Shopify storefront. We assess the relevant delivery, rights-management, distribution, and accounting providers and define their integration scope when digital publishing is part of the brief.

Can you preserve discoverability during a bookseller replatform?

We plan product and editorial URL mapping, redirects, canonicals, structured data, internal links, and sitemaps, then monitor Search Console after launch. Rankings cannot be guaranteed, but migration controls can reduce avoidable disruption.
