The work behind the practice

A portfolio of brands. One connected foundation.

Our toys and collectibles practice is grounded in SDG’s multi-year Mattel engagement: American Girl, Mattel Shop, and Mattel Creations. Three distinct storefronts, connected through a shared commerce and content program.

Mattel

From a staged replatform to a shared content system.

SDG engineered Mattel’s commerce experiences through a multi-stage Shopify Enterprise program and delivered its Contentstack integration end to end, connecting PIM-driven product enrichment and reusable content across brands and markets.

Beyond the storefront

Different reasons to buy. A system that understands each.

A gift buyer, a returning collector, and a brand merchandising team have different needs. We connect those journeys without making every storefront a separate technology project.

Product discovery for gifts and collections

Structure franchise, character, series, scale, edition, age guidance, and compatibility so discovery can serve different buying intentions. Product specifications and safety information remain owned and approved by your team.

Search & merchandising

Collector releases with clear expectations

Design the path from announcement to access, preorder, purchase, and delivery. Availability, quantities, eligibility, and release dates should be explicit, with launch controls tested before the most engaged customers arrive.

Performance & release readiness

Shared architecture, distinct brand experiences

Give each brand its own editorial and shopping language while sharing the foundations that benefit from consistency. We define reusable components, storefront boundaries, and release ownership before multiplying sites.

Enterprise Shopify architecture

Product and content data that work together

Connect PIM attributes to structured storytelling, collection pages, and campaigns. Govern enrichment, approval, localization, and publication so a content change has an intentional path to each market.

Contentstack integration

Accounts and membership with a defined purpose

Scope customer identity, membership, access, and service journeys around real business rules. Eligibility and privacy requirements need deliberate design; a login alone is not an access-control or compliance strategy.

Custom Shopify engineering

Inventory that survives the excitement

Model limited stock, preorder windows, mixed orders, cancellations, and fulfillment status across commerce and enterprise systems. Reconciliation and exception handling are part of the integration from the start.

A practical way forward

The right starting point. A clear path to launch.

Begin with one portfolio-wide problem or one storefront. Agree on what should be shared and what should stay specific to the brand.

How we work
  1. Map brands, buyers, and launch dependencies.

Review the catalog, release calendar, markets, collector requirements, content approvals, and existing systems. Test the riskiest product and order models before committing to a rollout.

  2. Build the foundation in deliberate stages.

Connect product data, content, storefronts, and operations. Use a representative brand or journey to validate shared components, migration controls, and release ownership.

  3. Roll out with evidence from the first release.

Carry forward tested patterns and address what the live launch reveals. Monitor discovery, access friction, order exceptions, and publishing effort across the portfolio.

Good questions

Let’s get into the details.

What toys and collectibles experience does SDG have?

SDG’s published work includes a multi-year Shopify Enterprise program for Mattel across American Girl, Mattel Shop, and Mattel Creations. SDG also delivered the Mattel–Contentstack integration, including PIM-driven enrichment and content reuse across markets. These storefronts belong to one client portfolio.

Can each brand keep its own identity on a shared architecture?

Yes. Shared engineering does not require identical storefronts. We decide which product models, integrations, components, and release processes should be common, and where each brand needs its own content, merchandising, and experience.

Can you support collector drops and preorders?

Yes. We scope eligibility, release timing, quantity limits, product availability, payment behavior, shipping expectations, and order handling. Native platform capabilities, apps, and custom development are evaluated against the actual requirements.

Does a Shopify build automatically cover product safety or children’s privacy requirements?

No. Your legal and product teams define applicable obligations, approved product information, audience requirements, and privacy rules. SDG can implement the agreed controls and workflows; the platform or storefront alone does not establish compliance.

Can you modernize a portfolio without replacing every system at once?

Yes. We can define a staged migration with explicit system boundaries, data owners, and release gates. The sequence depends on which dependencies can be separated safely, rather than assuming a simultaneous launch is the best option.
